Confirmation

What is Confirmation?

After Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, the Holy Spirit came down upon him and God spoke from heaven saying “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:9-11) This passage reminds us of the intimate connection between baptism and the sacrament of Confirmation.

50 days of Easter, Jesus fulfilled his promise to the disciples by sending the Holy Spirit to them on Pentecost. In the sacrament of confirmation, the person being confirmed is anointed by the Holy Spirit with the sacred oil of chrism, just as the Spirit came upon the first disciples at Pentecost.

Confirmation is the sacrament which gives the Holy Spirit in order to root us more deeply…into Christ, strengthen our bond with the Church, associate us more closely with her mission, and help us bear witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds. (CCC 1316)
