Lectors

Lectors

During the celebration of the Mass, Christ is present in the assembly, the proclamation of the Word and the celebration of the Eucharist. Lectors play a key role in the Liturgy of the Word by proclaiming the first and second readings.

As the church says, "It is Jesus Christ himself who proclaims the Word when the readings are read at Mass." God uses the voices of the lectors to speak to his people.

When it is not sung, the lector may also read the Responsorial Psalm. When there is no deacon present, the lector also leads the Prayers of the Faithful (Intentional Prayers).

The Gospel reading is always proclaimed by deacon, and if no deacon, the priest proclaims the Gospel.
